Introduction

Most people look on university as a time of freedom, change and learning to be yourself. Your experiences at this crucial time in your life may change you as a person. University should be a positive experience and there are a few basic rules you should follow to ensure that it really is positive for you in terms of health and lifestyle.

Before you get to university

Health

  • Be aware that you should register with a local doctor as soon as you arrive at university
  • You can register with university doctors whether you live in university accommodation or privately rented housing. You don't have to use university doctors though, and can register at any surgery in the area
  • If you will be moving away from home and need any kind of specific medical support, make sure you can pass on all relevant details to a new doctor

See the interactive section 'What happens in Counselling'

Spiritual

  • You will be introduced to the Chaplains in your first week
  • Chaplains often organise social and other activities that can be a good way of meeting other people

See the interactive section below about the University Chaplain Service

Moving on

Health

It is just as important to look after your health after leaving university. If you move away from the area, don't forget to register again with a doctor as soon as you have a new address, if you are not returning home.

Spiritual

If you have enjoyed activities organised by the Chaplains whilst at university, you could ask them for advice about how to continue this, or similar involvement after you leave.

Counselling

If you are having counselling sessions when the time comes to leave the university, your counsellor will advise you what to do next. This might involve, for instance, referring you to another counsellor or agency.
