Accommodation introduction

A student's choice of accommodation will be dictated by family circumstances, finance and geographical location.

Mature students may wish to live in the family home, as may some students for cultural reasons. Local students may stay with their families but may later wish to move into their own accommodation. Students from outside the university's local area may wish to consider renting university or private accommodation.

Why is it important to tell students about accommodation?

University-owned accommodation is limited, so if a student has any specific requirements (eg a disability or medical condition) they should contact the university's accommodation services as soon as they have their results. If they come through Clearing and want to live in halls, they should enquire about availability as soon as their place if offered.

The cost of living is an important factor in a student's budget. It would be extremely helpful if students were given information about accommodation in conjunction with student financial issues to enable them to work out realistic living costs.

See Interactive section for presentation 'Getting the right Accommodation' and 'Accommodation Checklist'.

Where to get additional information

  • University prospectuses will contain information about the type and cost of accommodation they offer
  • Many university Accommodation Services will have their own web page (access via the university home page)
  • University Student Unions often have details of private property to rent and can provide advice and guidance to students about the process
  • The university Disability Statements will have specific information about accommodation for students with disabilities.

Where to get additional information

Many students will not have entered into a legal contract such as a tenancy agreement before. Providing them with advice about what to look for and how to go about the process is essential support.

If a student wants to rent private accommodation they should start as soon as possible. If left till the summer vacation, many of the properties will be less desirable in terms of condition and cost.

Personal safety can also be an issue to be considered in conjunction with accommodation.
