Introduction

More and more people are choosing to come to university later in life - anyone over the age of 21 is counted as a 'mature student'. This means that many will have child care responsibilities in addition to the usual domestic commitments. There are many different organisations that are willing to help students with children and the government has now introduced some new "Tax Credits" which anybody can apply for.

Why is it important to tell students about childcare support?

The thought of combining degree level study with looking after their children and paying for child care may initially deter some students from considering university. As a tutor, you have an important role to play in encouraging students to find solutions to these problems and to apply to university. Before a student starts university they should do the following:

  • Obtain a copy of the DfES booklet "Childcare Grant and Other Support for Student Parents in Higher Education" - available from universities and LEAs
  • Apply to the Inland Revenue for their Tax Credits. These benefits are replacing several grants that used to be available, and are used to assess how much a student is now entitled to from the LEA in terms of loans and grants
  • Complete application forms for the LEA early, so there is no risk of arriving at university without funding
  • If they are going to need childcare (including before and after school clubs) make arrangements as soon as possible, as places are often limited
  • Think carefully about childcare needs in relation to their hours of study at the university
  • Find out if they are required to go on a placement or field trips as part of their course. These could be outside of normal working hours, or involve longer travelling times. If such activities affect their childcare costs students should then make sure this is included on all applications for financial assistance
  • Remind students that school holidays and university terms often fall on different dates so they should make their childcare provider aware of this

Where to get additional information

  • If a student is going to going to use a childminder make sure they are 'Registered' - a list is usually available from you Local Education Authority (ask for the Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership)
  • Further information on child care support funding can be obtained from the DfES

From the student point of view

Students need to plan ahead to arrange child care and to ensure that they have access to funding to pay for it without prejudicing their finances. Once a student starts their university course it is advisable for them to act quickly to ensure adequate funding for, and access to their child care. The following issues should be considered:

  • Students should make an early application (in the first term) to the Access to Learning Fund at the university they are attending for assistance with childcare costs
  • University Student Services can provide advice about applying to trusts and charities. Assistance from a financial adviser, including a reference, will ensure greater success with applications
  • Students with pre-school aged children may be eligible to receive Nursery Vouchers from the Government. They should ask their child's nursery to tell them more about this
