Introduction

This information covers Health issues, Faith and Counselling. It aims to give students an idea of the kind of support that they can access for all kinds of problems once they are at university.

These services are usually found within the Student Services team (although not all universities adopt this model) and consist of friendly, approachable professionals who are well-used to dealing with students and the problems and difficulties in their lives.

why is it important to give students 'lifestyle' information?

Student services (whether within a support department or as a stand-alone service) within HE are relatively more developed than services found in further education. This is because many students live away from their families and require a greater proportion of institution-based support.

Students receive information about student services (including those covered in this section) in their first week. Such information can be rapidly forgotten in the excitement of their new situation. Using this section will help to prime them to take the information on board.

Where to get additional information

Health

There may be a co-ordinator responsible for student health issues within your own institution. The excellent web site listed in the 'useful links' section provides valuable information.

Faith

www.faith.uce.ac.uk will give you an idea of what is provided at one university.

Counselling

Your own institution will probably have a counselling service from which you can find out more about the service provided and what to expect.

See also the useful links section.

From the student point of view

When problems develop, students may think it is 'wimpish' or failure behaviour to seek help from professionals. They are more ready to listen to their friends, who are not always able to advise appropriately or may struggle to cope with the burden of someone else's problems.

Please encourage your students to see the student services provided at university as an entitlement for them to use, especially those covered by this section. This information will be invaluable to them if and when problems occur.
